My Last Newsletter! (In this format)
Hey all!
I did not mean to be gone for another month - time really flies. I had started on a draft, but life caught up with me.
Some things that happened while I didn’t write a newsletter:
I finished reading Culture Map and I feel enlightened
Created a new way to track progress on hypotheses at work
Set up a process for moderated usability tests every sprint at work
Met Elisabeth of @uxohhello - the first person from Instagram that I’ve met in real life.
I want to keep writing this weekly so I can keep you in the loop and share what I’m learning - but something is not working. I will change up the format to experiment with a workflow that works for me. So this will be the last newsletter of the old format containing my dusty draft.
Feel free to reply to this email to give me feedback on how to improve the newsletter!
Written on April 25:
Last Friday, I helped a startup that I’ve been helping since last year. I started advising their UX/UI designers. They were early in their career and it was a window into my past. It helped reflect on what recommendations I would give to someone starting out.
The number one difference between a junior and a senior is that a junior has a narrow view of UX and lacks influence. And that’s perfectly normal, but that gives you an insight into how to quickly become a senior; Gain a holistic view of UX, its place in the business, and when and how to prioritize. Learn how to gain influence in the company, communicating and getting buy-in for your ideas.
So that was a pretty neat experience. We don’t look back enough to see how much we have grown. Take this opportunity to do that!
My favorite things this week
Podcast: Did you know when you share an experience (in person) it feels more intense, but once you start thinking about sharing the experience on social media, you enjoy it less because part of your brain will think about what to post instead of being present . This episode of the Happiness Lab made me think about how to enjoy the time I spend with other people more.
Video: Jacob Nielsen talks about his UX predictions for 2050 says that by 2050. One of them is that 11% of the workforce will work with UX. Insane.
Quotes of the week
Reducing the complexity of your business operations down to a basic formula is immensely helpful in allowing the growth team to focus on the right signals in this vast sea of data noise.
